The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, commonly known as the Duomo of Florence, is the main Florentine church, symbol of the city and one of the most famous in Italy; when it was completed, in the fifteenth century, it was the largest church in the world, while today it is considered the third in Europe after St. Peter’s in Rome and the Milan Cathedral. It stands on the foundations of the ancient cathedral of Florence, the church of Santa Reparata, in a point of the city that has hosted religious buildings since Roman times.

What you can expect

Meet your licensed tour guide in Piazza Duomo at n. 19/20 (just outside the “Sagrato della Misericordia”) and make your way towards the privileged, side entrance that will allow you to skip all the lines and access the Duomo Cathedral directly without any wait.

The Cathedral

After having taken part on this highly informative and interesting tour of this marvellous monument, you will have the added chance to access the Museum of Misericordia, located on the fourth floor of the historic headquarters in Piazza Duomo (on your own time, without the guide). This museum exhibits close to eighty pieces including manuscripts, paintings, coats of arms, furnishings, and artifacts of the Florentine craftsmanship. You will also have the possibility to admire the valuable works of important authors such as Santi di Tito, Benedetto da Maiano and Sano di Pietro.

  • A dress code is required to enter the Cathedral. No shorts or sleeveless tops allowed. Knees and shoulders MUST be covered for both men and women.
  • It is extremely recommended to wear comfortable shoes. During hot days it is recommended to wear a sun hat.
  • Due to increased security measures, some lines may form. Additionally, strict rules apply to enter the church (no knives, no scissors, no glass bottles, etc.)
  • Large bags, backpacks and suitcases are not allowed inside the cathedral.
